Identifying your insect photographs

Kindly note this service is temporary unavailable.

I very often receive requests via e-mail to identify a variety of insects and other arthropods photographed in and about the home or garden by enterprising insect photographers. I enjoy identifying specimens and take great care in doing so, often consulting varied sources to effect a correct identification. However, I must emphasize that I am not a professional entomologist and consequently I accept no responsibility for any incorrect identification that I may make. Where absolute confirmation of identification is required, for example for publication, I strongly suggest that you contact an expert in insect identification/taxonomy, preferably one that specialises in the particular Order from which your specimen comes.

When sending me photographs via e-mail PLEASE:

1. Reduce the size of your photographs to about 600 x 800 pixels or smaller at 96 ppi. Large files take ages to download.

2. If possible send more than one photograph showing the specimen from various angles.

3. Give as much information as possible for example, where it was found – country, city, inside or outside and approximate size.

4. Kindly limit your requests to a maximum of two or three per month per person as I receive many requests for identification and would like to give everyone a chance.

Enjoy your insect photography!
